Gardening Strategies

I like to garden. This shouldn't surprise anyone who knows me decently well.

However, like most things, gardening should have a strategy. Some general highlights of mine are:

  • Prefer food-producing to ornamental plants
  • Prefer long harvest windows to short ones
  • Prefer more flavorful crops
  • Prefer more productive plants
  • Minimize the amount of actual gardening work needed
  • Minimize the amount needed to learn

I've tried a bunch of different crops, but at the moment, I've come down to the following:

  1. Autumn raspberries - Because these fruit in the summer, these can have monstrous harvest windows.
  2. Blackberry/raspberry hybrids - If we optimize the autumn raspberries for, well, autumn, then instead of their summer harvest, we can have juicy blackberries.
  3. Superhot peppers - This is such an important part of our family's culinary identity that I can't imagine not growing these.

At the moment, I'm trying out different blackberry/raspberry hybrids, and I plan to try some different raspberries too.
